    Steps
Meet with the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gather requirements

Setup at least one meeting, preferrably face-to-face, to gather their specific business needs. Let the SME describe their current business environment and the need. If the SME refers to specific solutions, don't stop their branstorming effort and continue to take detailed notes.

Using the time available, ask specific questions around functional and non-functional requirements. Be sure to ask questions on how the SME plans to validate the business goals have been achieved (plan income, savings, revenue targets, etc.) in which case the discussion may yield more requirements on the solution.

A solution to their needs consists of:

    • parametric, or programmatic change,
    • report development to meet the core business needs,

and the required changes or builds to demonstrate the business goal has been achieved.

    Draft the BRD

Using the template provided, draft the Business Requirements Document.

Use sound Requirements Management concepts to define the requirements such as:

    • requirements must be atomic - only one requirement per statement,
    • requirements must be stated in the positive,
    • and so on
Store the draft copy on SharePoint

Copy the draft version of the BRD into the appropriate SharePoint folder on the project site.

From here on, SharePoint change control (via SharePoint versioning) must be used to document any changes to the BRD.

Review the BRD with the SMEs for accuracy
Send the SharePoint link to the SMEs for their review and/or approval.
Obtain SME/Stakeholder approval for the BRD

Capture SME and stakeholder approvals via email.

Store each approval email in the appropriate SharePoint project folder.
